Dividing Tools

This curved root knife from Lee Valley Tools was recommended on the Robin.  It wasn/t expensive, but is sharp enough to go through even siberian iris root masses.
I've gotten some pretty nice knives even cheaper  at yard sales too - Patsy Cunningham

Dividing Tips

  • If the root mass is loose, just hold it in both hands and gently twist and wiggle till they pull apart.  Don't hold by the fans, they'll snap off like a crisp vegetable - Bobbie Brooks
  • A large root ball should be hosed down to better see where it should be divided
  • You can divide a large plant in half by using a shovel down the middle while still in the ground and leaving half there (there will be some loss) - Ellen Laprise
  • DON'T  try to just remove a fan or two off the edge of a daylily while it is still in the ground, you may just chop off the fans from the roots.  Instead remove it from the hole first to see what you are doing - Patsy Cunningham
  • Use 2 garden forks, inserting them back to back down through the middle of a large root mass (when already out of the ground).  Pull them apart to separate - Kate Reed
